Many Young Drivers Can’t Change a Tyre
A recent survey by intelligentcarleasing.com has found that 54.5% of 18-24-year-olds would not know how to change a tyre on their car if they were to have a puncture or some other problem.
When asked why this was the case, respondents gave a number of different reasons, including:
- Many people now have breakdown cover as part of their insurance policy, and as such it is easier to call for help than to try and fix it themselves.
- Knowing how to change a tyre isnât part of the driving test so there has been no requirement to learn.
- An increasing number of cars are now fitted with run-flat tyres, which has reduced the need to learn how to change a flat tyre.
The survey also revealed a gender split, with 57.1% of male respondents saying they were able to change a tyre, compared to only 34.0% of female respondents.
Intelligentcarleasing.com suggests that this might be because men in this age group are more likely to have a driving licence than women. It also suggests that young men are more likely to be too embarrassed to admit that they donât know how to change a tyre!
